Thanksgiving 2008

Happy Belated Thanksgiving. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Mike and I had a great one. We went to my parents house for a couple of days. We went down on Tuesday afternoon and spent that evening with my parents. On Wednesday Mike hung with my parents and I had a girls out afternoon with my friends Jillea (see previous post). That afternoon I made pie and we spent the rest of the day with my parents.

Thanksgiving day began early. Fred likes to get up super early when he's at my parents house. I try to go back to sleep but he wants in and out of the bedroom all morning long. He does not get up early at home. Mike was also an early bird on this trip. I just wanted to sleep in. I'm not a morning person or a late night person(I love sleep). That morning we watched the Macy's Thanksgiving parade and then the dog show. I love seeing all the different breeds of dogs. There was a basset hound named Noodles. So cute. The only thing I contributed to the dinner beside pie was yams and apples. It's my mother in laws recipe and I love it. I had not made it before, but it turned out great. My aunt and uncle came to dinner and we had fun eating lots of food and chatting. After pie we left for home.

We had one incident this trip with Fred. Mike and the rest of the gang had gone outside to pack our car, I was in the bedroom making sure we had everything when I realized Fred was by himself in the kitchen. That is never a good thing. He has short legs but a long torso. So I walked into the kitchen and there he is with his paws on the counter grabbing turkey legs off the counter. I had quite the tug of war getting that leg out of his mouth, but I got 95% of it out of there. He did get a bite in there. Boy was I mad. Needless to say he was in trouble. He is such a brat when food is within his reach. He will get it and no means nothing to him.

Even with that incident we had a great time. Now it's time for Christmas decorating at home. Here are a couple of pictures. One is of Mike watching the dog show and the second is of my family. My parents are on the left and my aunt and uncle are on the right with Mike.

Twilight

Twilight the movie. What can I say? I loved it. I'm surprised I liked it. I went into the movie thinking that I would not like it. I rarely like a movie after having read the book. I was wrong. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving my friend Jillea and I went to lunch at Applebee's and then went to see Twilight. It was her second time seeing it and she loved it. She was such a good sport to see it a second time so I had someone to go with. Now I know why she was so willing to see it again. I want to see it again. I can't wait till the rest of the movies come out. I may have to read the books again. Here's a picture of Jillea and I at the restaurant.

Coldplay

Mike and I went to Coldplay last night at the Energy Solutions Center. It was a great concert. The concert opened with a band called Sleeper Car. They were very good. I'm not always a fan of opening bands, but this one was really good. Next up was a solo artist name Jon Hopkins. I have no idea what his music was, but I was bored after a few minutes of it.

It took awhile after the last singer before Coldplay came onstage, but it was worth the wait. They were fabulous. They sang all the best songs and the light show was a great addition to the singing. I would definitely like to see them again.

I have one complaint about the show and that was the noise level. I don't know if I'm getting old or if it's the ES center, but it was extremely loud. I couldn't even hear Mike who was sitting next to me. The concert was still worth the noise level.

UFC Fight Night

On Saturday night Mike and I attended fight night at Hooters with a couple of friends of ours and some of my co-workers. I was a little apprehensive about going to Hooters. I had not been there before and I think it's reputation was preceding itself. Not sure what I was expecting, but it was a fun place to go to watch the fight and eat a lot of buffalo wings.

The gang included myself, Mike, Steve, Ryan, Frank, Clint, Spencer, Jim and Tanner. I don't usually hang out with 7 guys and be the only girl, but it was lots of fun. I think it's cool that the guys from work invited me and my husband and friends to hang out with them.

The fight itself was good. I was rooting for Lesnar and he won by submission. He is a HUGE guy and beat the heck out Couture in round two. I'm just excited it went past one round. To me it's not much of a fight if it only lasts a couple of minutes. The prefights were all very short but fascinating. One guy looked like he was going to get his arm broken off.

Here are some pictures. The first picture is the whole gang, second picture is Steve(on the left) and Ryan (on the right). The third picture is Frank (on the left), Clint (in the middle) and Spencer on the right.

This is funny!

This is Fred eating out of his food container (excuse the messy floor, I need to clean the area where he eats). On Sunday after we had returned home from having dinner with friends, Mike brought in a new bag of dog food from my car. As he fills the container I go into another room to check our phone messages. After a few minutes I realize I hear chomping coming from the kitchen. I ask Mike if he had fed the dog and he said no so I walk into the kitchen and this is what I see. Mike had inadvertently left the lid off the container and Fred was helping himself to a late night snack. Mike and I broke out into hysterically laughing as we watch Fred eat his food. A few times he would stop eating, look up at us waiting for us to get mad at him and then go back to eating. Instead of getting upset I got my camera and then fed him a little food. I guess he was hungry.

Happy Birthday Steve

On Monday, our friend Steve turned 26 and we had a fun time celebrating his birthday at Rodizio's. We had a great time hanging out with Steve, his mom and some friends. The food was fabulous as always. Of course we all felt like we had to roll out of the restaurant since we ate so much. Here are a couple of pictures from the evening.

Happy Birthday Steve!

Will He Never Learn?!

As you all know we have a cat. He's super cute and cuddly, but very disobedient. He loves to get on every flat surface in our house. The mantle, the numerous tables, counters, sink, etc. No matter how many times you tell him to get down or spray him with water(he hates that) he gets back up.

For instance, the other night I turned around and spotted the cat on my phone table (it has an official name, but I can't think of it). This is an antique table I have inherited from my grandmother. It's a beautiful wood table with attached seat. It was made for putting your telephone on top and inside the table you put your phone books. So cute. I used to play on this table for hours at my grandparents house. Anyway, the seat cover is embroidered by my grandmother and I don't want the cat to be on it. So of course he loves that seat because it's a flat surface.

So I told the cat to get off (picture one) , he looked at me and promptly went to sleep (picture two). I didn't know if I should get mad or laugh so I took pictures and then made him get down. He was back on it a couple of hours later. Go figure.

Sweetheart Quiz

I decided that while I'm watching tonights debate I would post this cute quiz I got off Viv's blog. Don't get me wrong I like the debate, but I can't just sit and watch it, I have to be doing something else too.

General Conference

This weekend is LDS General Conference. I love these conferences (April and October). It's very uplifting to listen to the leaders of the church. This month I've been a member for 15 years (1993 was a very big year for me) and have felt like I made a very good decision to get baptized.
You can listen to conference talks at lds.org.

It's quite rainy today, but so beautiful. I love rainy days. There is only one downside to rain and that is Fred. He will not go outside in rain. It doesn't matter how much he has to go to the bathroom he will not go if it's raining. Snow is another matter. He doesn't mind snow in fact he loves it. Go figure. I love rain, he doesn't. I don't like snow, he loves it. Must take after Mike. :)

Our LPA dinner last weekend was great. We had the biggest turnout ever and was so much fun. I love hosting these events. Next up is our Halloween party at the end of the month. That one is always fun. The kids are so cute in their costumes.

This upcoming week will be fun and busy. The Jazz preseason begins this week, I have a birthday dinner for Michael and Lena (from work) to attend and my mom is coming for a visit. We always have fun when she comes to town.

Christmas cards for the troops

My friend Marina asked a bunch of us in our little people group to make some Christmas cards for the troops in Iraq. So this is my card that I made. It's a little hard to see, but I cut a square window in the front of the card and stuck a metal ornament tied with green ribbon on the inside of the card so it shows through in the window. I stamped the front of the card with a star stamp to make a watermark. The star is a mimic of the star design on the metal ornament. I then stamped a Christmas saying on green paper and attached it to the card with foam squares. Very simple, but cute.

Tonight Mike and I are hosting the monthly little people dinner at Ruby Tuesday's in Draper. So far we have 28 people showing up. That's our largest group yet for these dinners. Hopefully I'll get pictures tonight and post them this weekend.

15 Years

15 years ago today I move to Utah to get married to Mike. It's hard to believe it has been 15 years already. Time flies by. I was so nervous to move away for the first time. I lived in the same room in the same house for 18 years and wasn't sure what it would be like to live in a big city. Salt lake city is huge compared to my hometown of 7,000 people. I had a rocky start, I got lost (a lot), I startd college and hated it, Mike worked 12 hours a day, six days a week at his music business, so I was alone a lot. My poor, patient mom got a daily call from me because I was so lonely. I lived in a house with 5 other girls who were 8 to 10 years older than I was. It was an eye opening experience for me. I will never voluntarily live with 5 adult women again.

Now 15 years later I would live nowhere else. I love Utah. It is such a beautiful place. The city is big, but not so big you feel lost in a maze of people and everyone is so friendly here. Now I need to convince my parents to move here after my mom retires. I'm sure that won't happen, but I can always try.

CraftyChick

My friend Adawna has a new blog showing the cute crafts she makes. She is extremely crafty and I love that she will have a blog to show people what she makes. She made me the cutest vinyl lettering for my front door that says Welcome to our home. I haven't put it up yet, but when I do I'll post a picture. I've seen the boo letters she has made when I was down at her house on Saturday. Super cute!

Be sure and go to http://www.littlecraftythings.blogspot.com/.

Greek Festival

On Friday, Mike and I with some friends went to the Greek Festival. This was my first time going to it. The others had been there many times. It was a blast. We got there around 7:30 and the line for the food wrapped around the entire tent holding the festivities. We sat down around 9ish with our food. I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was even though we were all spending over an hour in line just to get food, but so worth it. The food was fabulous. We all ate so much we were sick by the time we left (around 10:30).

My favorites were the gyro, the greek rice and Loukoumathes(deep fried dough with cinnamon). Oh so yummy. We ate two orders of Loukoumathes between the five of us. During our dinner we watched traditional greek dances. They were very entertaining to watch. I told Mike we need to make this an annual event. There's nothing like good food, friends and entertainment.

33

I turned 33 on the 28th. It was a fun day. I ended up working that day since Mike did too. Work had my desk all decorated and a few people sent me birthday emails. After work my friends, Michael, Nicole and Ashley took me to dinner at Red Iguana. Our favorite place to go for our birthdays. Mike had the night shift so he didn't go to dinner with us. As usual it was fun. They crack me up like no other people. When Mike got home from work he had a surprise for me. He bought me a card and a cake! Mike never gives me cards and not once has he given me a cake for my birthday in the years that we've been married. I was totally shocked and pleased. He definetly earned some points with me.

The gifts I got were great. My parents gave me a book, The Host by Stephanie Meyer. Two movies, 27 Dresses and Ratatouille. I love those movies. I also got a scrapbook magazine and a couple of cute shirts. Mike and I did joint gifts this year. We took our trip to California and bought concert tickets to see Coldplay in November. Mike also took me to dinner at Thaifoons for dinner on Wednesday. We love that place. Michael, Nicole and Ashley gave me a gift certificate to Target.

P.S. The Utah LPA chapter will be doing a fundraiser booth at the Avenues street fair next Saturday. We do face painting for the kids. The fair starts at 9 and goes till 6. It's on Third Avenue between I and N. I'm sure I will be there most of the day. Do try to stop by if you are in the area.

CODA Fundraiser

The weekend of August 15th the Utah chapter of Little People of America had the opportunity to assist a new non-profit organization with their fundraiser. CODA is an organization that was started by Matt Roloff (Little People, Big World) and Marty Klebba(Pirates of the Caribbean) to help raise money for LP adoptions and higher education. Each year they hold a fundraiser in a different city, this year it was in Salt Lake.

Our local chapter set up a booth and did pirate tattoos for the little kids. Marty and another Pirate actor did autograph signings, there was two showings of the first Pirate movie and a silent auction. It wasn't as largly attended as they hoped, but still did well in the fundraising.

We had a lot of fun being apart of this fundraiser and hope they choose our city again. Here are a couple of pictures. One is with Adawna and I with the two Pirate actors, the other is a bunch of us with the Jack Sparrow look a like they hired from Disney.

Twin Falls Temple

Mike and I had the opportunity to go up to the open house of the Twin Falls Temple earlier this month. We went with my parents and my Aunt and Uncle who live in Twin Falls.

It's a beautiful temple. I think it's great that there is a temple in that area. The closest temples to there are Idaho Falls, Rexburg and Boise. Each of them at least two hour drive.

The greatest part was going with my parents. They are non-members so they have never had the opportunity to be in a temple. I think they understand the concept better now that they've walked through the temple and could ask questions.

After the temple open house we went to dinner at Outback Steakhouse and then went home to watch the Olympics.

The picture isn't so good. I took it as my dad was driving by the temple. I cut Moroni (or bugle boy as my dad calls him) off.

It's Here

Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final book in the Twilight series, is finally here. I asked my parents for the book for my birthday and then made my mom give it to me early so I could read it. It was so good. This one was my favorite, the first one is my second favorite. I didn't like the second and third books as well. I read the book in less than a week(750 pages), would have been quicker, but the week I got it was pretty busy. Now I can't wait for the movie. Only 4 months till it gets released.

Quick Hello

Mike and I along with his friend Steve are on our way to southern California this week. When I get back I have lots of information to post. It's been a busy month. Also, I wanted to wish my husband a Happy Birthday (his is this Friday, mine is next Thursday).

Happy 44th Birthday!

Long Time

Well, here it is the end of July and I haven't posted in a while. Life has been crazy. Work is stressful. I never realized being in a higher position at work would be so challenging. It seems co-workers don't like it when you move up a position and they have no shame in telling it to your face. I need to develop a thick skin and I'm working on that, in the meantime it sucks.

In other news. Lava was fun. On Friday, a group of us got there early and had a community dinner and then sat around and talked till really late. It got really cold that night, colder than usual. We hit the low 40's. I forgot a jacket, socks and only had one blanket. Usually that is enought, but this time I almost froze on Friday night. Saturday, we slept in and then made breakfast. A bunch of people went down the river and to the pool. I hung around the campsite visiting and then went to town with a bunch of them. That night after dinner, 4 of us ladies, decided to ditch the men and go to the hot springs on our own. It was really hot, even the mildest pool was pretty hot. We had a lot of fun just chit chatting with each other. We didn't get back to the campsite till after 11. Needless to say we were not cold that night. On Sunday we left early and headed home. It was a lot of fun and I'm glad we do this every summer.

Not much else is happening. Mike and I have been house hunting, but haven't found what we are looking for. We are not totally sure if we will move or just fix up our house.

On the 24th of July one of Mike's aunts died suddenly of a heart attack. She was on of his dads sisters. A very nice lady. It was sad to hear she died.

That's all for now. Next weekend Mike and I are headed to Idaho to see my parents and to go to the open house of the Twin Falls Temple. I'm really excited to see it. I'll post pictures of the temple later.

Isn't He Cute!

Today is Fred's birthday. He is 10 years old. This is the most recent picture of him. It was taken a couple of months ago at my parents house. He's still as cute as ever just a little grayer.

It's hard to believe we've had him for that long. We had quite an auspicious start with him. Mike and I decided one day that we wanted to get another dog, we already adopted an older bassett from the Humane Society. So one day Mike saw this cute bassett in the window of a pet store and convinced me to go take a look. Of course he knows what a huge animal lover I am and knew that I would want him. Sure enough as soon as I saw him I was in love. He was 11 weeks old and so cute and tiny(hard to believe he was ever tiny). I thought he was perfect and it would be a breeze to add another dog to our clan. Boy was I ever wrong. Fred was the dog from hell. I had no idea puppies are like babies. They have their days and nights mixed up and they aren't potty trained. Not only that, but they bite everybody and eat everything. We went through more shoes, belts and pillows than anyone would ever imagine. Our older dog was not happy to have Fred, Fred wanted to play with him and he was too old to play. They never did become the best of friends.

Fred and Mike bonded immediately, in the pet store. Fred and I had to learn to like each other. When we got Fred I was a college student and was home most of the day. So of course most of his care and training fell on me. I had no idea how to train a dog. I tried to be super nice to him so he would listen to me. That did not work. I would tell him to not do something, he would stop, look at me and then go back to doing whatever it was he wasn't supposed to do. Now if Mike told him not to do something he stopped immediately. That used to make me so mad. I wanted to take Fred back to the pet store at least 20 million times in that first year. Eventually we hired a trainer to help us (he flunked puppy preschool, no surprise there). Now 10 years later Fred has become a momma's boy and never leaves my side. It's really cute.

Things I've learned from Fred:

1. Dogs are stubborn. Since Fred had his days and nights messed up and I wasn't getting any sleep I thought it was a good idea to bring him to bed with us each night. I tried leaving him in his crate at night and he would just howl all night. Not kidding, all night. Sleeping in our bed worked well because he was too small to get down and get into anything so he learned to sleep at night. The bad part is that it takes years to reverse the dog of that habit once they learn it. Fred would rather sleep with us than anywhere else.

2. Puppies bite.

3. Potty training a dog can take 9 months no matter how strict you are.

4. Dogs are the best pets. There is nothing like coming home from work at night and your dog is waiting at the door for you with a toy in his mouth. He does it for me when I get home and then repeats it when Mike gets home. It's so cute and heartwarming.

Wow, this is a long post. As for the rest of life. I'm finally feeling normal again, it only took 8 days of antibiotics. Mike is enjoying the great golfing weather we are having. I'm getting the hang of my new job and am really enjoying it. I'm off to Lava Hot Springs on Friday with my friends, Russ and Adawna. We go every year and it is a blast. I will post pictures next week. Mike won't be going because he hates to camp even it's only a day or two. He gets to stay home and take care of the creatures.

Happy 4th of July

It's hard to believe it's July already. This year is just speeding by. Not much is happening at our house today. Mike has to work till 6:30 and then we are going to have dinner and watch the fireworks from the baseball field. Not too exciting. Usually we go to Huntsville for the day, but since Mike has to work this year we decided to skip driving up after work. I'm just going to hang out at home with the boys and finish reading the third book in the Twilight series. I've been putting off reading this book, but the new one comes out next month so I've got to get it finished. I'm also going to spend a lot of time sleeping. I've been pretty sick this week with a sinus and ear infection. It has knocked the wind right out of me. I manage to make it to work and that is it. My house looks like a tornado has hit and I haven't made dinner since Monday night. Not good.

Last Friday, June 27th, I had the opportunity to go up to Idaho Falls and see my friend get remarried. It was a beautiful and simple ceremony and reception. It was good to see her so happy again. It's been a tough year for her and I'm glad she met someone who obviously loves her very much. It was kind of a long day, I went to work in the morning (4 1/2 hours), drove up to Idaho Falls (3 hour drive), went to the wedding and reception and then drove home again (another 3 hour drive). Thank goodness for Mountain Dew. It was a beautiful drive home, the sunset was incredible. Congratulations Jillea and Andrew!

That's it for now. Have a Happy 4th of July.

Crazy Month

It's hard to believe that June is almost over. It has gone by really fast. The month started out with me applying for a new position at work. Lots of paperwork to fill out and an interview that I didn't think went well. I have since learned that I did get the new position and will begin that this week. It's a big job with lots of responsibilities and I hope to do well.

Mike and I got the opportunity to have a week long visit with his sister Sharon and our niece Suzanne. It was good to see them and celebrate Suzanne's 15th birthday. Happy Birthday Suzanne!

I was hoping to go to Idaho for Father's Day, but that didn't work out. I did get to talk to my dad on Father's day. Happy Father's Day, I love you.

We are going to end the month visiting with some friends from out of town, my new position at work and my friend getting remarried.

See you next month.

More Memorial Day Pics

Here are a couple of pictures from Monday night. We decided after Mike got off work to run to Bluffdale and Lehi. His dad is buried at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The pictures of Mike and I and his two brothers are in Bluffdale. His stepdad, grandparents and several of his relatives are buried at the Lehi cemetery. When we got to his stepdad's grave there was this beautiful rainbow. It's not easy to get a good picture of a rainbow, but Mike did a great job.

Memorial Day Weekend

Happy Memorial Day. This has not been the most exciting weekend for us. Mike had to work today, yesterday and Saturday and I have a head cold. Not feeling so hot. I've left the house a total of two times this weekend. Once to go to the grocery store and the other time was to go to Steve's house to watch the UFC fight. Both of these were on Saturday. The boys are enjoying having me home. I swear the cat doesn't leave my side when I'm home. I thought cats were indedpendent creatures!? Today has been rainy so I'm just going to stay inside and scrapbook. I haven't done that in a while. I'm also watching a new show (to me) that friends at work have been telling me to see, Jon and Kate plus 8 on TLC. It is so cute. They are having an all-day marathon. I can't imagine having 8 kids. It's crazy, but they look like a fun family.

I've included a photo I took this morning. I was at the dining room table scrapbooking and couldn't resist taking a picture. Barney is in his favorite spot (my grandmothers phone table), Fred's in his usual spot on the couch and you can see on the TV, Jon and Kate plus 8.

Have a good rest of the weekend.

The Utah Jazz

Last night Mike, myself and a couple of friends watched the final Jazz game of the season. They made a valiant run in the end, but it was a little too late. Mike is so sad the season is over. There are few things in this world that Mike loves more than the Jazz. I'm not much of a fan of the Jazz or anyone sports (except UFC, that will be another post), but the playoffs have been fun to watch. Mike even bought me a pink Boozer t-shirt to wear during each game (which I did). Last night the five of us had our shirts and Jerseys on. Mike was wearing his Jazz t-shirt, I was wearing mine, Heather was wearing a Williams jersey and Steve wore Brewers jersey, then there was Fred. Mike decided to put his Korver jersey on Fred. It was pretty cute on him. Not sure Fred thought it was too cool. Above are a couple of pictures of Mike and Fred.

Mother's Day Weekend

Mike and I had a great Mother's day weekend this year. On Saturday, we visited his mom and gave her some new shoes. On Sunday, we drove up to Idaho and visited with my mom. I made her homemade Manicotti and we watched the Jazz game. Thank goodness they won. I don't think it would have been a good drive home yesterday if they lost. Mike is a HUGE fan of the Jazz. So much so that if they lose he will not talk to anyone the rest of the night, it's pretty funny. For Mother's day I gave my mom a copy of the Josh Groban Dvd. This concert was filmed here in Salt Lake. My mom was supposed to go to that concert with me and Mike, but she had foot surgery and couldn't make it. So I took a friend of mine with me and we had a great time. The concert was great, but even better we got to shake Josh's hand. On the dvd it shows Matt and I shaking hands with him. It's track 11 on the dvd. You can see a little bit of Mike too. I have yet to get a copy of this dvd, but I can't wait to see the whole thing again. Thanks mom for a fun weekend. Sorry it was so short. You and Lu Jean are the best moms two people could ask for. Love you.

It's about time

I've decided it's time to catch up with technology and create a blog. Now I just need to learn how to download pictures to my computer and I'm all set. Not sure if or who will visit this blog besides myself and my mom, hi mom, but I thought it would be fun to give it a try.

This has been quite the week for us. Tuesday, March 18th was our 14th wedding anniversary. We had the opportunity to spend the whole day together. We were scheduled to go to dinner at Ruth Chris that night but my mother-in-law, Lu Jean, ended up in the hospital so we scratched dinner. We did get to Noodles and Company late that night. Luckily, my mother-in-law is doing much better and should be home soon. Also, this week was my mothers birthday, my dads birthday and my brother-in-laws birthday. Happy birthday, mom, dad and Ken.
